Image:maps.png Mail Abuse Prevention System

After 2003 MAPS lost their influence (after they required users of their lists pay to use them) and was sold to TrendMicro in 2005.

Currently, OpenRBL does not check these zones, even though they remain widely used (e.g. by AOL and SBC, just to name a couple).

[edit] Lookup

MAPS requires subscription for access to their database.
Public lookup is only possible via WWW at their own website:

[edit] Zones

(subscription required)

  • RBL: the granddaddy of spam blacklists. Initially, users were encouraged to use the list to blackhole all traffic (not just mail traffic) from the listed IPs, which was initially distributed via BGP to facilitate this.
  • rbl-plus.mail-abuse.org (combined)
  • DUL: dynamic user list (see also PDL)
  • RSS: relay spam (see also ORBS)
  • OPS: proxy spam
  • NML: unconfirmed mailing list
